Embark Studios has announced a hiatus for the Expeditions system in its upcoming shooter Arc Raiders, with plans to potentially overhaul or even scrap the feature entirely. Originally slated to return in early 2027, the studio is now considering removing Expeditions altogether, according to executive producer Aleksander Grøndal.

Expeditions function as Arc Raiders' version of a prestige system, where high-level players invest resources into a "caravan" to reset their levels, skills, and inventory in exchange for unique benefits. However, many players have expressed dissatisfaction with the significant grind involved for what they perceive as a minor payoff. The fifth Expedition, scheduled for the end of September, will be the last before the system is paused.

Embark stated that issues such as "tight departure windows, the reward structure, and accessibility for new players" require more than minor adjustments. These problems necessitate substantial changes to the system. Grøndal acknowledged in an interview that the system was not perfect and that the team is exploring significant changes. "Maybe we'll scrap the whole system altogether. That is on the table, too," he told PCGamesN. "Right now, the team is trying to figure out what the next steps for Expeditions are."

While the ultimate fate of Expeditions remains undecided, players can expect significant alterations. The next major update for Arc Raiders, titled "Frozen Trails," is expected in October and will introduce new challenges, including a frozen map and new movement mechanics. The final decision on Expeditions' future will likely come after this update.
