Embark Studios has launched the Frozen Trail update, a substantial 2.0 patch for its extraction shooter Arc Raiders. This update, the first following a new six-month content cadence, overhauls multiple aspects of the game, including introducing a new map, new enemy types, customizable personal outposts, and weapon upgrades.
The centerpiece of the update is Pendola Pass, a snowy mountain region situated north of the Rust Belt, which Embark describes as its most ambitious map to date. This new environment features a unique "Flash Freeze" condition that poses a threat to players who remain exposed for too long.
Players will face new threats with the addition of several new ARC enemy types. The Frigate is a large airborne carrier designed as a high-stakes challenge that cannot be completely destroyed. The Bully, a four-legged variant of the Leaper, employs hit-and-run tactics. Smaller threats include the Skulker, which attacks from a distance, and the Hydra, a stationary turret capable of targeting three players simultaneously.
The update also introduces personal outposts, player-owned spaces outside of Speranza that can be customized with decor, furniture, and upgrade benches. While players cannot currently traverse these outposts, Embark is considering future expansions for this feature.
Weapon customization sees a significant expansion with the introduction of "Weapon Amplification" through a new research bench. This system allows guns to be upgraded with unique abilities, such as flammable ammunition or rapid-fire capabilities, with fifteen guns receiving these amplifications at launch. Two new firearms are also added: the Stiletto, a light ammo battle rifle serving as an early-game alternative to the Renegade, and the Bantum, a quickfire revolver designed to compete with the Anvil.
Furthermore, Arc Raiders' skill tree has been reworked to provide more impactful choices and encourage distinct playstyles, with not all skills being acquirable on a single raider. The update also adds "stencils" which function as multi-use gun skins that can be applied to weapons, with blueprints available through the new research station. New non-combat gadgets, including a grapple hook, banjo, and camera tool, have also been introduced.
