Embark Studios' cooperative PvE extraction shooter, Arc Raiders, is set to receive its largest update yet with the arrival of 'Frozen Trail'. This significant content drop introduces a new snowy map, Pendola Pass, alongside new enemies, weapons, and gadgets. However, the most impactful addition highlighted in recent hands-on previews is a drastically improved grappling hook.
While a grappling hook has been present in Arc Raiders since its launch, it was classified as a legendary-tier item, making its acquisition and use infrequent. The new grappling hook, featured in 'Frozen Trail', is of a lower rarity, significantly increasing its accessibility. This change allows for more dynamic gameplay, with players able to utilize it for complex maneuvers akin to Spider-Man's web-swinging. Though requiring manual aiming and a slower ascent compared to simply climbing, its potential for mid-combat traversal and daring escapes is substantial.
The updated mobility options extend beyond the grappling hook. A new skill allows players to scramble up walls and reach ledges, further enhancing player freedom. Complementing these traversal tools are new tactical items such as the tether launcher, capable of immobilizing targets, and the yank grenade, which can disrupt aerial enemies. The 'Bully,' a new terrifying enemy, was also encountered, with the tether launcher proving effective for gaining a tactical advantage against it.
'Frozen Trail' also aims to improve the game's replayability. The new Pendola Pass map features varied loot zones that change each round, aiming to prevent predictable hot spots and encourage diverse strategies. A weapon amplification system is also being introduced, which modifies and enhances certain weapons. While early impressions suggest this system may not entirely salvage the game's least effective weapons, it promises to alter weapon performance.
The update's headline features include two new endgame encounters: the Emperor, embedded in a mountainside, and the airborne Frigate. These are designed to emulate raid-like mechanics found in other games. However, these specific encounters were not accessible during the preview session. Their successful implementation will be crucial in determining if 'Arc Raiders' can reclaim a leading position in the extraction shooter genre, especially with potential competition on the horizon. The 'Frozen Trail' update is scheduled to launch on Thursday, October 8.
