Embark Studios has rolled out the highly anticipated Frozen Trail update for its co-op shooter Arc Raiders, introducing a significant overhaul designed to re-engage players and refine the game's core experience. This update marks the first major content drop since the studio shifted to a semi-annual update cadence earlier this year, a move intended to foster a more sustainable development cycle and deliver more meaningful content.
The Frozen Trail update brings a wealth of new features, including a chilly new map, a complex puzzle and combat-filled raid-like event, new weaponry, fresh enemy types, a revamped skill tree, customizable player spaces known as Outposts, a system for enhancing weapons, and cosmetic weapon options. A multi-tiered battle pass also accompanies the launch, offering ongoing rewards for players.
Among the most notable additions are the new gadgets, which embody the game's "tools, not rules" design philosophy. The update introduces two in-game cameras that function as a diegetic photo mode, allowing players to capture in-game moments and even take selfies. Additionally, new musical instruments like harmonicas and banjos are set to arrive, encouraging emergent player interactions and performances.
Innovative Traversal Tools
The Tether Launcher is a new handheld device that allows players to connect two points within a limited range, opening up creative possibilities for manipulating the environment and enemies. It can be used to link flying machines for mid-air collisions, tether enemies to sturdy objects, or create new traversal pathways.
Complementing the Tether Launcher is the Yank Grenade, which deploys a tether upon detonation, automatically securing the nearest object or enemy to a solid surface. This offers a more immediate and reactive solution for crowd control and environmental manipulation in tense situations.
However, the standout new gadget for many players is the improved grappling hook. While a similar tool existed at launch, this new version offers significantly more versatility. Unlike the faster, straight-line Snaphook, the new grappling hook allows for swinging across gaps, climbing walls, and safer descents from high places, akin to traversal mechanics seen in titles like Uncharted 4. This slower but more flexible tool can negate fall damage in numerous scenarios and remains available without cooldowns or durability concerns, provided the player doesn't lose it through in-game hazards.
This injection of new mechanics and content aims to reaffirm the core appeal of Arc Raiders for both long-time players and those considering a return. While the update may not convert players who have already dismissed the game or its genre, the Frozen Trail update presents a more robust and experimental experience, demonstrating Embark Studios' commitment to evolving the co-op shooter.
