Arc Raiders PvE Server Test Raises Concerns About Core Gameplay Loop

Embark Studios is preparing to test dedicated Player-versus-Environment (PvE) servers for its upcoming title, Arc Raiders, in a limited one-week trial starting October 13. While this may seem like welcome news for players who, like many, prefer to engage with the game solely in a PvE capacity, one player argues that such a shift fundamentally misses the point of what makes Arc Raiders compelling. The studio cited a player survey indicating that just over half of respondents (51%) expressed interest in PvE servers.

Despite actively avoiding player-versus-player (PvP) encounters for the vast majority of their 120 gameplay hours, and only engaging in combat with other players a handful of times since, the prospect of servers that entirely remove the possibility of PvP interaction is unappealing. The core appeal, according to this perspective, lies not in the act of combat itself, but in the dynamic created by the threat of it. In standard PvPvE servers, players coexist with others who possess the ability to engage them in combat but choose not to. This unspoken calculus, the constant potential for unpredictable interaction, is presented as the primary source of the game's rewarding cooperative experiences.

This player's experience has often involved emergent cooperation, banding together with strangers for mutual support when faced with in-game challenges. It was discovered that by consistently opting for diplomacy over aggression, the game's matchmaking system began pairing them with like-minded players. However, even within these largely peaceful "utopian lobbies," occasional PvP encounters serve as a potent reminder of why the PvE aspect of Arc Raiders functions so well. It is this unexpected aggression, or potential betrayal, that elevates cooperative play.

The act of resolving conflicts through proximity chat, rescuing fallen teammates rather than preying on them, and earning the trust of strangers in a resource-scarce world are highlighted as the repeatable, "magical moments" that define the game. The concern is that by mandating a PvE-only experience, Embark Studios removes the player's agency in choosing this dynamic. The possibility of these emergent cooperative scenarios, which rely on the underlying threat of PvP, could be diminished.

There is a worry that dedicated PvE servers might inadvertently push players who value the underlying PvP threat into the traditional servers, potentially fragmenting the community and reducing the likelihood of encountering those memorable, opt-in cooperative moments. The hope is that the upcoming PvE server test remains just that—a test—and does not become a permanent fixture that removes the option of player-driven emergent cooperation.
