Embark Studios has finally launched the long-awaited PvE test for its cooperative shooter, Arc Raiders, offering a refreshing alternative to the game's traditional player-versus-player combat. This new mode addresses player feedback, acknowledging that a significant portion of the audience prefers a less confrontational approach to the game.
The Frozen Trail update, which released a few days prior, introduced new content, but the PvE test has only recently become available. Early impressions suggest it is a highly enjoyable experience.
Dropping into Pendola Pass in the PvE mode offers a considerably more relaxed atmosphere compared to the standard PvP experience. Even when faced with immediate enemy fire upon exiting a bunker, the absence of player-versus-player encounters fundamentally changes the dynamic. Players can explore the map and engage with the game's various threats without the persistent anxiety of being ambushed by other players.
This shift in focus allows players to appreciate the world of Arc Raiders more fully, from its mysterious lore to its expansive landscapes. While dangerous arcs still populate the environment, the ability to encounter other players and potentially collaborate to overcome challenges—such as taking down a new, tankier arc enemy called the Bully—enhances the sense of community. The threat of being finished off while downed by an arc adds a layer of tension without the betrayal or frustration that can come with PvP encounters.
One player's experience highlighted this collaborative aspect. After successfully taking down several arcs, a player encountered a new enemy type, the Skulker, which proved to be more formidable than anticipated. While pinned down and running low on ammunition, assistance arrived from another player who helped dispatch the enemies before moving on. This act of cooperation inspired the player to pay it forward, offering support to another raider dealing with a swarm of arcs.
The PvE test provides a valuable opportunity for players to enjoy Arc Raiders' core mechanics, including its action and crafting systems, in a less stressful environment. This temporary mode offers a welcome change, allowing for exploration and engagement with the game's threats without the constant worry of player-versus-player conflict.
