Archive of Our Own Faces Extended Outage, Fanfic Community Anxious

The popular fanfiction repository Archive of Our Own (AO3) is currently experiencing a major outage, with the Organization for Transformative Works (OTW), the non-profit managing the site, estimating that service restoration could take between two and four weeks. What was initially thought to be a minor issue potentially resolvable within hours has now become a significant disruption for the site's vast user base.

The OTW provided an update via their status account, stating, "We estimate that service restoration for #AO3 will take around 2 weeks but it could be up to 4 weeks. We are hopeful that we will be able to bring the site back up in a degraded state sooner." The exact cause of the extended downtime remains unknown, and Kotaku has reached out to the OTW for further comment.

AO3 is a cornerstone of online fandom communities, hosting a wide array of fan-created literature spanning countless fandoms and genres. Its volunteer-run model provides free access to a diverse range of stories, from elaborate narratives to explicit content. The site's inaccessibility has understandably caused significant distress and anxiety among its readers and writers.

Social media platforms have seen an outpouring of reactions from users grappling with the loss of access. Many have expressed their dismay and shared how the site is a constant part of their online lives. This is not the first time AO3 has faced significant downtime. In 2023, the site was taken offline for several hours due to a DDoS attack claimed by a hacktivist organization, which also reportedly involved a ransom demand.
