Arkane Studios Faces Potential Closure as Xbox Seeks Buyer

Arkane Studios, the acclaimed developer behind titles like Dishonored and Deathloop, is facing an uncertain future as Microsoft reportedly intends to close the studio. This development is part of a broader restructuring at Xbox, which was announced in July and includes plans for over 3,000 layoffs between July 2026 and 2027.

While some studios were made independent as part of this strategy, the fate of Arkane Lyon, based in France, was initially unclear. However, Microsoft informed the studio's management on July 16 that it intended to shut it down. Due to French labor laws, Microsoft was required to engage in a three-month consultation period, during which it is mandated to find a buyer for Arkane and negotiate a job protection plan for its employees. According to a report from French outlet Le Monde, Arkane has until November 13 to secure a new owner.

Negotiations regarding the redundancy plan have been challenging, according to a representative from the Printemps Écologique union, who spoke with Le Monde. The unions, in conjunction with the French Video Game Workers' Union (STJV), are reportedly seeking an extension for both the redundancy plan talks and the search for a potential buyer, with several takeover scenarios under consideration.

The Future of Arkane

Union representatives have emphasized the need for measures that facilitate re-employment for affected staff, noting the limited prospects in the current video game market. "The redundancy plan must be adapted to the video game market where, currently, the prospects for returning to work are extremely limited," one representative stated. The unions question the justification for closure given Microsoft's significant profits, with one representative calling the employees "collateral victims of Xbox’s change in strategy."

Arkane's next project, Marvel's Blade, is reportedly nearing the end of its production. The game was first announced at The Game Awards 2023, and subsequent reports indicated an internal delay to late 2027. With the potential closure of Arkane Studios looming, the release of Marvel's Blade is now in question.

Unions are reportedly considering legal action to challenge Microsoft's economic justification for closing Arkane, citing a contradiction with information previously provided about the studio's financial health. The current situation suggests Microsoft aims to divest from Arkane to improve short-term profitability, despite the studio's perceived success.
