Fantasy Flight Games is bringing back Arkham Horror 2nd Edition with Arkham Horror Remastered, the first release in its new "Vault Series." This initiative aims to reintroduce classic games from the company's catalog to modern audiences. The original 2nd Edition has been out of print for years, with a third edition of Arkham Horror released in the interim.
"Arkham Horror 2nd Edition is a cornerstone of the industry that paved the way for many modern gaming experiences," said Wesley Mouri, FFG's brand ambassador. "It's a fan favorite that many people have affectionately called their first entrance into board gaming." The decision to remaster it stems from ongoing fan demand to complete collections or experience the title for the first time.
The Remastered version aims for a smoother player experience, incorporating lessons learned since the last expansion for the 2nd Edition was released 15 years ago. Designer Dane Beltrami explained that the primary focus was to clarify rules and card text to minimize the need for frequent rule lookups. Changes include combining the Arkham Encounter Phase and Other World Encounter Phase into a single Encounter Phase, and enhancing graphic design for clarity, such as on the terror track.
The art style for Arkham Horror Remastered has been updated to align with the aesthetic of the popular Arkham Horror: The Living Card Game. "Our primary goal with this updated art direction is to modernize the experience for a new generation of players," Beltrami stated. "By bringing these elements together, we create a more cohesive and accessible look that still feels true to the dark, atmospheric aesthetic of Arkham Horror."
IGN has received an exclusive first look at the artwork for "Tulzscha - The Green Flame," a herald from the Kingsport expansion, created by artist Peter Polach. The art depicts cultists reacting to the menacing green fire, with a clearer focus on the horrors within Tulzscha itself.
Campaign pledge options on Gamefound will offer flexibility, including a bundled option with the base game and all expansions, as well as the ability to pledge for the base game and add individual expansions later.
Unfortunately, Arkham Horror Remastered is not compatible with existing 2nd Edition expansions due to updated graphic design and streamlined card text. "As a result, the two versions of the game aren’t compatible with each other," Dane explained.
Regarding favorite investigators, FFG's Wesley Mouri often plays as Dexter Drake and Jenny Barnes, appreciating Minh Thi Phan for her support role. Brand ambassador Dane Beltrami prefers Diana Stanley and Leo Anderson, Mandy Thompson, and Jim Culver for their varied playstyles.
The original Arkham Horror, designed by Richard Launius, is approaching its 40th anniversary. The success of the 2nd Edition paved the way for numerous expansions and the broader "Arkham Horror Files" line of games.
"Our immediate goal is to successfully reintroduce the 2005 ruleset to fans, both new and old," Mouri said. "We are putting all our energy into making this release the best it can be."
Arkham Horror Remastered is positioned as an ideal entry point for new players and a welcome return for long-time fans of the cult-classic board game.
