Armed Fantasia, a JRPG intended as a spiritual successor to the beloved Wild Arms series, has seemingly been cancelled. The decision to discontinue development was revealed in the latest financial statement from Digital Bros, the parent company of publisher 505 Games.
The project was led by Akifumi Kaneko, who previously served as lead designer on the original Wild Arms and its sequels up through Wild Arms 4. The game was announced alongside Penny Blood in 2022, with both titles launching a dual Kickstarter campaign. The campaign aimed to fund prototypes for both games, with the hope of securing publishing deals for full development.
This ambitious Kickstarter successfully raised ¥379,328,385, equivalent to nearly $3 million USD at the time. Armed Fantasia subsequently secured a publishing agreement with 505 Games, while Penny Blood was picked up by Japanese publisher Dangen Entertainment. However, Penny Blood's development has been marred by legal disputes, with its developer Studio Wildrose suing Dangen Entertainment in 2024 over alleged withholding of Kickstarter funds.
Armed Fantasia had originally been slated for a March 2025 release. By March of this year, the development team had completed a vertical slice featuring the main scenario and core gameplay systems, which was then submitted to the publisher. Despite this progress, the project lead alluded to challenges in communication and transparency with the publisher, noting that his ability to share information was heavily influenced by the publisher's strategy.
Digital Bros' decision to discontinue development on Armed Fantasia marks a significant blow to the project and its backers, bringing an end to a four-year journey that began with such high hopes for a revival of classic JRPG elements.
