Armed Fantasia, a JRPG envisioned as a spiritual successor to the PS2-era Wild Arms series and helmed by former Wild Arms producer Akifumi Kaneko, has been officially cancelled. Digital Bros, the parent company of publishers 505 Games, announced in a recent financial statement that the decision was made to discontinue development on the title. The company cited it as one of several projects, alongside a sequel to the free-to-play strategy game Battle Islands and the action RPG Directorate Novitiate, which had previously announced its own cessation in May.
The game's journey from its inception to this cancellation has been marked by significant challenges. Armed Fantasia was initially revealed in 2022 as part of a dual Kickstarter campaign alongside another JRPG, Penny Blood. Both games drew inspiration from and were developed by veterans of classic Japanese role-playing series, with Armed Fantasia aiming to emulate Wild Arms and Penny Blood looking to the Shadow Hearts series. The campaign's stated goal was not to fully finance the games, but rather to fund proof-of-concept demos to secure conventional publishing deals.
The Kickstarter campaign proved remarkably successful, raising ¥379,328,385, significantly exceeding its ¥100,000,000 goal. This financial success appeared to pave the way for Armed Fantasia, as it was subsequently picked up by 505 Games.
However, Penny Blood encountered difficulties first. In May 2024, its developers, Studio Wildrose, filed a lawsuit against Japanese publishers Dangen Entertainment and its former CEO Ben Judd, alleging the withholding of production funds. Studio Wildrose claimed that Dangen and Judd were involved in the management of the Kickstarter funds. The lawsuit is reportedly still ongoing, and while Penny Blood has not been formally cancelled, it is currently without a publisher. A roguelike spinoff, Penny Blood: Hellbound, was released later in 2024 to ostensibly raise the brand's profile.
Meanwhile, Armed Fantasia experienced a period of relatively quiet development. Despite this, it missed its planned March 2025 launch window and was subsequently delayed indefinitely. With 505 Games now ending its development entirely, it appears unlikely that either of these highly-backed Kickstarter projects will reach completion. Developers involved in both projects face an uncertain future.
