Pokémon Go is bringing back Armored Mewtwo, a rare variant of the genetically engineered Pokémon, for the first time in six years. This marks the culmination of Pokémon Go Fest 2026's Mega Finale.
Armored Mewtwo was first introduced to the game in 2019 as a tie-in to the CGI movie "Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back – Evolution," which itself was a remake of the 1998 film "Pokémon: The First Movie." The armored variant then reappeared for Pokémon Day in February 2020. This upcoming appearance will be the first opportunity for many players to obtain Armored Mewtwo, particularly since the introduction of the Remote Raid feature in April 2020 made raiding more accessible.
The Pokémon will be featured in raid battles on September 5 and 6, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time. Players participating in the Go Fest Mega Finale will also have the chance to battle Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y. Additionally, players can catch versions of Mewtwo that possess adventure effects, special abilities usable outside of standard battles. One such effect, Dynamic Punch+, increases damage in Mega Raids and allows players to break two shields in Super Mega Raids instead of the usual one. Another effect, Future Sight+, causes Pokémon with three-star or higher stats to glow when encountered.
Niantic has confirmed that a shiny version of Armored Mewtwo will not be available during this event. This limited-time return provides players a renewed chance to add this distinctive form of Mewtwo to their collections.
