Aspyr Media has indicated that its recent re-release of "The Lord of the Rings: War in the North" is just the beginning, with plans for "even more classic releases" from the franchise to follow. The company shadow-dropped a "Legacy Edition" of the 2011 action RPG earlier this week, marking its first venture into The Lord of the Rings titles under a licensing deal with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.

While Aspyr has not detailed which specific "classic" Lord of the Rings games fans can expect, the announcement opens the door for potential remasters or re-releases of titles from various eras. The period around War in the North's original release saw other notable games from Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, including "The Lord of the Rings: Aragorn's Quest" (2010), "Guardians of Middle-earth" (2012), "Lego The Lord of the Rings" (2012), and "Lego The Hobbit" (2014). Further back, when Electronic Arts held the license, games such as "The Lord of the Rings: Conquest" (2009), "The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth" (2004), and its 2006 sequel were released, alongside titles based on Peter Jackson's film trilogy.

In addition to these planned re-releases of older games, the Lord of the Rings gaming landscape will also see entirely new titles. Among these are a "deeply immersive" RPG in development by Kingdom Come: Deliverance developer Warhorse Studios, and another game reportedly being developed by Crystal Dynamics, the studio behind the recent Tomb Raider titles.
