Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced Achieves Franchise's Highest Critical Acclaim Since 2013

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced has achieved a critical reception not seen by the franchise since the original release of Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag in 2013. The remake, which launched in July 2026, currently holds a Metascore of 84. This figure places it among the highest-rated entries in the long-running series, with the original Black Flag boasting a Metascore of 88.

While the original Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag's score was based on 36 reviews, Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced's 84 Metascore is derived from a larger pool of 83 critic reviews. This critical success contrasts with the scores of many subsequent entries in the franchise. For comparison, Assassin's Creed Odyssey received a Metascore of 83, and other titles like Assassin's Creed Unity and Syndicate scored in the 70s. However, the all-time highest-rated game in the mainline series remains Assassin's Creed 2 with a Metascore of 90, followed closely by Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood at 89.

Historical Metascores for the Assassin's Creed series include: Assassin's Creed (81), Assassin's Creed 2 (90), Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood (89), Assassin's Creed: Revelations (80), Assassin's Creed 3 (84), Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag (88), Assassin's Creed Rogue (72), Assassin's Creed Unity (72), Assassin's Creed Syndicate (76), Assassin's Creed Origins (81), Assassin's Creed Odyssey (83), Assassin's Creed Valhalla (80), Assassin's Creed Mirage (76), and Assassin's Creed Shadows (81). Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced's score of 84 positions it as one of the franchise's most critically successful titles in over a decade.

Despite the generally positive critical reception, GameSpot's own review offered a more nuanced perspective. In the review, Jordan Ramée noted that while the remake successfully captures the essence that made the original a benchmark for pirate video games, it doesn't quite surpass the game it is based on. The review highlighted that the original's enduring appeal as a pirate simulator remains potent, even when re-experienced through the updated remake.
