At Fate's End Delayed to 2027, Playable Demo Available Now

Thunder Lotus Games, the studio behind the acclaimed Spiritfarer, has announced a delay for its next title, At Fate's End. Originally slated for a 2026 release, the game is now targeting a 2027 launch window. However, a playable demo is available now on Steam, allowing players to get a taste of the upcoming game.

In a statement on Steam, Thunder Lotus explained that the delay is to ensure a smooth release, stating, "We’ve made so much progress on the game since its 2025 reveal but it needs a little more love and care to ensure its release is as smooth as possible." The studio added, "The team is very impatient to get At Fate’s End in your hands and we promise it’ll be worth the wait!"

Exploring the World of At Fate's End

At Fate's End shifts away from the life-simulation elements of Spiritfarer to focus on action and combat, featuring swordplay alongside a unique dialogue-based battle system. Players control Shan, who wields the God Sword Aesus and must reclaim swords from her estranged siblings to ascend to the throne as Princess of Swords. The demo offers a preview of the game's combat and characters.

The game's narrative centers on a succession drama within a family, exploring themes of sibling rivalry and personal insecurities. Creative director Nicolas Guérin has stated that the team aims to create characters with whom players can empathize, drawing inspiration from real-world familial conflicts and the developers' own experiences. "They're all fucked up in a way. They all represent a failure of their own making, but [...] they all have that part of them that you still like, they're all lovable, they're all terrible," Guérin said.

Innovations in Combat and Narrative

During the Game Developers Conference 2026, the demo for At Fate's End garnered significant attention. One notable aspect highlighted was the game's approach to boss battles. For instance, a fight against Shan's sister Camilla paused midway for a verbal confrontation, with the conflict resolved through reconciliation rather than outright defeat. This deconstruction of traditional boss fights, turning them into emotionally driven theatrical moments, was praised for its innovative feel, transforming the experience from a typical fantasy adventure into an opportunity to broker peace.

Thunder Lotus is encouraging feedback on the demo through a dedicated survey. The full release of At Fate's End is planned for 2027 on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. While a Nintendo Switch 2 version has been discussed as a possibility by the developers, no official announcement has been made.
