Spiritfarer developer Thunder Lotus is preparing to release its next title, At Fate's End, a game that merges visual novel elements with action-adventure gameplay. Early impressions suggest a visually striking experience that captivates with its art style and unique mechanics.
At Fate's End follows Shan Hemlock, who is unexpectedly named the Princess of Swords. Tasked with reclaiming her family's scattered blades, Shan must navigate a world where diplomacy and force are both viable options, accompanied by her sentient god sword, Aesus. The game artfully separates its gameplay into distinct phases: conversations and exploration, which lean into its visual novel roots, and combat, which draws parallels to games like Hollow Knight: Silksong.
A Hand-Drawn Masterpiece
The game's presentation has been a standout aspect. At Fate's End features a meticulously hand-drawn art style reminiscent of a storybook, enhanced by beautifully designed tarot card motifs and stylized menus. Even the overworld map is described as exceptionally detailed and visually appealing. The character animations are fluid and expressive, with subtle details like Shan's hair movement during animations contributing to the overall polish.
Card-Based Mechanics and Insights
Gameplay in At Fate's End revolves around an equipable card system, inspired by the archetypes of Shan's siblings. These cards grant abilities, such as dashing or double-jumping, but also come with a reversed effect, adding a layer of strategic depth. For example, a card inspired by a sister might offer a dash or a double-jump, depending on its orientation.
Combat is presented as accessible yet with potential for depth. It is largely based on positioning, featuring an omnidirectional attack and unlockable abilities powered by Arcana energy. A themed skill tree is available to further customize Shan's combat prowess. In addition to combat, players engage with an 'insight' system. By exploring the Hemlock family's estate and conversing with its inhabitants, players collect cards that can be combined to uncover truths about family members, potentially leading to diplomatic resolutions.
Miniature combat encounters also serve to unlock skill points or advance the narrative. The combination of narrative investigation, relationship building, and engaging combat has already captivated players during the demo phase, promising an engrossing experience upon full release.
At Fate's End is slated for release in 2027.
