Koei Tecmo and Gust's Atelier franchise has ventured into generative artificial intelligence with the release of RyzaChat: AI, a mobile spin-off available on iOS and Android in Japan. This new title transforms the series' popular protagonist, Ryza, into an AI-driven chatbot designed for both role-playing quests and open-ended conversation.

The game returns players to the setting of Kurken Island from the original Atelier Ryza. In its RPG mode, players can engage in a virtually unlimited number of personalized, generated quests with Ryza and other series characters through an open-ended chatbot interface. A separate "Free Chat" mode allows for more casual interactions, enabling players to converse with Ryza as a virtual companion. The app also features an ASMR mode.

This initiative is part of a broader trend within the Japanese game industry, with over 50 percent of companies reportedly experimenting with AI. RyzaChat: AI is a product of a partnership between Koei Tecmo and the AI startup Spiral AI, aiming to expand the reach of the Atelier intellectual property through new technology.

Koei Tecmo has described the project as an ethical AI adventure. The company stated that chat logs will not be used to train future AI models, and Ryza's voice was trained exclusively on clips from the original Japanese voice actor. The game itself utilizes original art contributions from series artists, eschewing generative AI for its visual assets.

Despite these ethical considerations, the monetization model includes a subscription service offering benefits like exclusive costumes, alongside a token-based system for continued chat access beyond initial free allotments. This structure appears to target dedicated fans and raises questions about the potential for exploitation.

A global release is planned for RyzaChat: AI, with the Japanese version already incorporating multiple languages, including English. An international release date has not yet been confirmed.
