Atlus has offered an explanation for the recasting of the original English voice actors in the upcoming Persona 4 Revival, citing difficulties in securing the original talent. However, statements from several prominent voice actors suggest a different narrative, leading to disbelief among fans.
In an interview with GamesRadar, Persona 4 director Kazuhisa Wada explained that "quite a few people who we weren’t able to get," necessitating the search for a new cast. He stated that the team had to "roll up our sleeves" and "start over" with a new ensemble.
This assertion stands in contrast to social media posts from last year by members of the original cast. Yuri Lowenthal, who voiced Yosuke Hanamura, inadvertently confirmed the existence of the Persona 4 remake by sharing his experience. In a now-deleted post, he wrote that he had "begged" Atlus to allow him to reprise his role but was denied, stating, "they don’t want me to come back." Similarly, Amanda Winn Lee and Erin Fitzgerald, the original voices for Yukiko Amagi and Chie Satonaka respectively, have publicly stated that Atlus did not approach them for the remake.
Several original cast members, including Johnny Yong Bosch, Troy Baker, Laura Bailey, and Yuri Lowenthal, have achieved significant recognition in the nearly two decades since Persona 4's initial release. It is speculated that cost-saving measures may have played a role in the recasting decisions, in addition to any potential availability issues. The practice of recasting is not unprecedented within the franchise, as some original actors, like Troy Baker and Laura Bailey, were replaced by Matt Mercer and Ashley Burch in later Persona 4 spin-offs, with both Mercer and Burch themselves becoming well-known voice actors.
Wada's interview also touched upon Atlus' respect for the original cast's contributions. He suggested that the studio might have preferred not to have the original actors if they could not secure the entire original lineup. However, given that many original cast members have expressed a willingness to return, the discrepancy between Atlus' claims and the actors' accounts raises questions about the true motivations behind the recasting.
