WIT Studio, the original animation studio for the early seasons of 'Attack on Titan,' has announced that a new project connected to the franchise will be revealed next week, on August 20. The studio shared a cryptic message stating, "It seems that they, during ‘that period,’ will be holding a special dinner," accompanied by a promotional image featuring key characters Eren, Armin, Mikasa, Levi, Hange, and Erwin. This visual is credited to Hajime Isayama, the manga's author, Kodansha, and the Attack on Titan The Final Season Production Committee.
The announcement comes as a surprise given that the anime's "Final Season" concluded in 2023, having fully adapted Isayama's manga. The anime's finale was further supplemented by a compilation film, 'The Last Attack,' which included an additional sequence.
Furthermore, WIT Studio's involvement is noteworthy as they handed over primary animation duties to MAPPA for the Final Season, which aired from 2020 to 2023. WIT Studio has since focused on other projects such as 'Spy x Family' and 'Ranking of Kings.'
This development aligns with comments made by 'Attack on Titan' producer Tetsuya Kinoshita last year, who indicated plans for continued "films like Last Attack, concerts, and various game collaborations." While a video game, 'Attack on Titan 3,' is slated for release on December 10, no other official anime projects have been announced.
The cryptic phrasing of the announcement, particularly the "special dinner" and "that period," may allude to the series' recurring themes of cannibalism or a specific timeframe within the 'Attack on Titan' narrative. Given the characters featured in the teaser image, who were all alive before the events of the Final Season, the project could potentially be a prequel. Further details are anticipated on August 20.
