Directors Joe and Anthony Russo recently revealed that they extensively considered depicting Steve Rogers' mission to return the Infinity Stones to their proper places in the timeline after the events of Avengers: Endgame. The journey, which culminates in Rogers choosing to live out his life with Peggy Carter, was a narrative thread the filmmakers "circled for a long time."
Speaking to CBR, Joe Russo explained that the team had "toyed around with an idea of like, 'Is there a montage where he puts the stones back?'" However, they ultimately decided against it, feeling that such a sequence would have "played past the ending" and that the endeavor was "much more complicated than a montage could sustain."
Anthony Russo added to this, stating, "I think that's a great idea. How about a movie?" This suggests a deeper consideration for exploring Rogers' post-Endgame adventures beyond what was shown in the film.
These discussions align with past comments from Chris Evans, who has indicated he received various pitches to reprise his role as Captain America but held out for a concept significant enough to warrant his return. While no concrete plans for a film or series focused on this specific mission have materialized, the extended cut of Avengers: Endgame now includes a scene that shows the beginning of Rogers' journey, where his reunion with Peggy Carter is interrupted by Loki, setting the stage for his story in Avengers: Doomsday.
