Directors Joe and Anthony Russo have addressed concerns surrounding the production of the upcoming Marvel film Avengers: Doomsday, which is reportedly being filmed without a completed script. The directors defended their approach, characterizing their filmmaking style as improvisation-based and rehearsal-driven.

"We always view the script as a living organism," Joe Russo stated in comments reported by the Associated Press. "We're improvisation-based, rehearsal-based directors. We like to see what the actors bring to the characters, and sometimes you don't get the actors until a few days or few weeks before you shoot them. And a lot of the time, that's when the magic happens."

This method allows for flexibility on set, particularly with a large ensemble cast. The directors suggested that the on-the-fly adjustments are more likely to pertain to specific lines of dialogue or individual character moments that emerge organically from actor performances, rather than fundamental plot points. The core narrative structure of Avengers: Doomsday is understood to be established prior to filming.

The production is also undergoing further reshoots with both new and returning cast members, including a teased involvement from Jeremy Renner, who plays Hawkeye. These additional filming periods are scheduled to occur alongside the preparations for the next film, Avengers: Secret Wars.

Avengers: Doomsday is slated for release on December 18.
