Avengers: Doomsday directors Joe and Anthony Russo have humorously suggested that Doctor Doom's introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been in the works for a long time, following new scenes in the Avengers: Endgame Encore re-release that hint at his arrival.
During an interview with Empire, the filmmaking duo discussed how one of the new teasers attached to Endgame's re-release connects to the broader MCU. The moment in question, revealed to those who saw Endgame Encore, features the familiar sound of Tony Stark working on his initial Iron Man suit. However, this time, the visuals shift to show Victor von Doom crafting his own mask, offering a new perspective on the film's original concluding moments as "Doomsday" looms.
When asked about this connection, Joe Russo quipped that "it's been planned all along," a joke that acknowledges the film's eventual rebranding and renaming to Avengers: Doomsday from its initial title, The Kang Dynasty. Anthony Russo added to the jest, noting, "It's almost like the same actor is playing both characters!"
The directors also touched on the significant connection between Robert Downey Jr.'s portrayal of Iron Man and his upcoming role as Doctor Doom. Joe Russo elaborated on the thematic resonance of the scene, stating, "There is certainly a symmetry at play here. There is an interesting examination of good and evil at play. And I think that that scene at the end, obviously it's intended to be almost identical. It's because there's a duality being explored."
Avengers: Endgame Encore, which premiered in theaters last week, offered audiences a prelude to Doctor Doom's arrival. While some Easter eggs were reportedly exclusive to IMAX and Infinity Vision screenings, the tease sets the stage for future revelations. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to premiere on December 18, 2026.
