Marvel Studios is significantly scaling back its theatrical output for 2027, with Avengers: Secret Wars slated to be the only Marvel Cinematic Universe film released that year. This decision aligns with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige's stated commitment to "focusing on quality" over quantity, a strategy aimed at combating viewer "superhero fatigue."
The absence of other MCU films in 2027 creates a 12-month gap between the December 2026 release of Avengers: Doomsday and the December 2027 premiere of Secret Wars. This marks one of the longest periods without a new MCU movie in the franchise's history, as the studio prepares for what is described as a potentially universe-ending conclusion to Phase Six with "Secret Wars."
Feige explained in an interview with Empire that the studio has been discussing this shift for some time, noting that a higher volume of releases can lead to being "spread thin." He highlighted the particular importance of the Avengers films, stating, "the Avengers is as important as it comes."
This move is a continuation of a strategy initially announced by Disney in 2024, which outlined plans to reduce MCU releases to two or three movies and two TV shows annually. This follows a period in the 2020s where audiences have increasingly expressed fatigue with the high frequency of superhero content, with some years seeing as many as four movie releases alongside numerous television series.
While 2027 will see only one MCU film, audiences will still have access to other Marvel-related content. Sony's Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is scheduled for release on June 18, 2027, and on the television side, Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 is slated for a 2027 debut.
Feige further emphasized the significance of Avengers: Secret Wars, describing it as a pivotal point that sets up "the future, to what's next." He clarified that the film is not intended as a reboot of the MCU, but rather a foundation for subsequent projects. The studio has already revealed two confirmed films for 2028: Ghost Rider and Panther III, with the latter set to premiere on December 15, 2028. Ghost Rider's release date remains unspecified beyond its 2028 target.
Fans will get their first taste of the MCU's current trajectory with the upcoming release of Avengers: Doomsday in December. Information regarding other projects announced at the San Diego Comic-Con Hall H panel is also available.
