Kane Parsons, the director behind the fan-made film "Backrooms," has confirmed that he has held meetings with game developer Valve. However, Parsons stressed that he has no intention of adapting any of Valve's intellectual property unless it can be done to a high standard.
During an appearance on The Kyle Buchanan Show, Parsons, who was wearing a Valve hoodie, addressed speculation about his recent visits to the company's offices. These visits followed Parsons' public expression of interest in creating a Portal movie and his earlier Instagram posts about traveling to Valve. While he did not confirm the specifics of any ongoing projects, Parsons stated that his conversations with Valve are focused on creative possibilities and whether a compelling adaptation can be achieved.
"They work in experiments, and I like that, because that tends to be how I work," Parsons said. He elaborated that his approach involves abstract creative discussions, exploring various directions rather than sensationalizing potential projects. He emphasized that if a project doesn't feel right or if there isn't a clear path forward, he would advocate against pursuing it. Parsons noted that Valve often prefers internal experimentation, and any significant outcomes would likely become known organically.
Parsons has previously mentioned working on three "dream projects," leading to speculation about a collaboration with Valve. He has expressed less interest in adapting properties like Star Wars, instead focusing on childhood favorites, including Valve's games. Despite the lack of a new mainline Portal game since 2011, the series retains a strong fanbase. The possibility of a film adaptation potentially sparking renewed interest in a new game, or even Parsons collaborating directly with Valve's developers, remains a topic of discussion among fans.
