Parsons, who is only 20 years old, posted photos from his trip to Valve's headquarters on his Instagram Stories on September 16. This marks the second visit to Valve for Parsons this year; he also shared images from a trip in June.
The "Backrooms" film, based on a 4Chan creepypasta, has been a critical and commercial success, grossing approximately $393 million worldwide against a $10 million budget. The film has even garnered praise from acclaimed game director Hideo Kojima.
Parsons has previously expressed his desire to direct a "Portal" movie, calling it a "dream project" in a New York Times interview in May. He also noted that the game was a significant inspiration for his own work and alluded to incorporating a "Half-Life" sound effect into "Backrooms."
Fans have been hopeful about a "Portal" adaptation, especially given the prolonged silence surrounding the previously announced film project. In 2013, J.J. Abrams' production company Bad Robot announced plans to adapt "Portal," along with "Half-Life," for the screen. However, these projects have seen little to no public development since then. Abrams stated in 2021 that the "Portal" film was still in development at Warner Bros., but no updates have emerged in the years since.
The continued visits to Valve by Parsons, coupled with his expressed interest in directing a "Portal" movie, have led fans to speculate that Valve might be considering a new direction for the film adaptation, potentially with Parsons at the helm. Many fans on social media have voiced their support for this possibility, expressing a preference for a new collaboration over the long-dormant Abrams project.
