The popular horror film Backrooms is set to arrive on HBO Max on Friday, September 25, with a television debut on HBO linear channels scheduled for the following day at 8 p.m. ET. This streaming release follows the movie's successful theatrical run, which began less than four months ago.
Backrooms achieved significant box office success, earning over $80 million during its opening weekend and rapidly becoming A24's highest-grossing film. Its global theatrical performance neared $400 million, establishing it as one of the year's top-grossing movies.
Towards the end of its theatrical exhibition, Backrooms offered "Everything Must Go" screenings that included over 15 minutes of additional footage, mirroring the style of director Kane Parsons' original YouTube series. This bonus content is currently accessible for free on YouTube, though its inclusion on HBO Max remains unconfirmed.
Currently, Backrooms can be rented or purchased digitally through platforms such as Prime Video. Physical media, including 4K Blu-rays with extensive special features, are also available for purchase from the A24 Shop.
Critics have generally received Backrooms favorably, with IGN awarding it an 8/10 and describing it as "a truly terrifying cinematic rabbit hole." The film holds an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Discussions regarding a potential sequel are already underway, and Parsons has also expressed interest in adapting Valve's 2007 game, Portal. The success of Backrooms has also spurred development on other creepypasta-inspired films, including a Siren Head movie and an upcoming Resident Evil film.
