Balatro developer LocalThunk has emerged on Discord to provide an update on the game's upcoming 1.1 patch, addressing concerns about the significant delay. The update, originally slated for a 2025 release, was pushed back into 2026, a decision developer LocalThunk himself announced last year due to burnout. He has now indicated that development is proceeding, albeit at a more deliberate pace.
LocalThunk acknowledged the community's anticipation and his own earlier commitment to a 2025 release, stating, "I understand how frustrating that must be and I wish I could go back in time and slap some sense into myself." He explained that the intense development cycle led to burnout, prompting him to step away from the game. After a period of rest, he has eased back into development, likening his current approach to that of a hobbyist, free from the pressure of deadlines and creative constraints.
He shared some teases about the 1.1 update, including the revelation that there will be at least four new Joker cards, a notable increase from the initially mentioned two. The update also features a new tier 2 voucher named Lunker, algorithmic adjustments for voucher selection, and a rework of the blue stakes.
LocalThunk stressed that he intends for the 1.1 update to be the final significant content release for Balatro. He anticipates a subsequent 1.1.1 patch for balance adjustments based on player feedback, but stated, "Don't expect any more than that." He also confirmed that a multiplayer mode will not be implemented.
Reflecting on his current development experience, LocalThunk expressed a renewed sense of enjoyment and fulfillment. "This past year of dev has been probably the most fulfilling work I've ever done," he commented, emphasizing his desire to avoid releasing an unfinished or rushed product. He plans to remain largely offline, checking in periodically to offer progress updates, but will not commit to a release window until the update is finalized.
The Balatro community on Discord has largely responded with support and encouragement for LocalThunk's approach, prioritizing his well-being and the quality of the game over a swift release.
Despite the continued uncertainty regarding the release date, the developer's reappearance and his positive outlook on the development process have been met with understanding from the player base.
