Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 Receive Major Update with Quality-of-Life Improvements

Beamdog has released patch 2.7 for Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, Baldur's Gate 2: Enhanced Edition, and Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition. This update, which entered beta last February, brings a suite of quality-of-life improvements to the classic Infinity Engine titles, focusing on modernizing their functionality nearly 14 years after their Enhanced Edition releases.

Enhanced Cloud Save Functionality

A significant addition in patch 2.7 is the proper integration of Steam Cloud saves. Previously, cloud save functionality was controlled within the games' internal gameplay menus, a system that proved counterintuitive and inconsistent with how most other Steam titles operate. The new patch shifts control to the Steam client itself, allowing users to manage cloud saves directly through their Steam library settings, mirroring the standard behavior across the platform. GOG Galaxy cloud saves have also been updated to function correctly.

Native Apple Silicon Support and Performance

Mac users will benefit from the new patch with the introduction of native support for Apple Silicon. This update ensures the games run optimally on Apple's ARM-based M-series chips, providing faster launch times and improved overall performance. While the games already ran well on this hardware, native support is expected to further enhance performance and potentially reduce power consumption on Mac laptops, leading to longer battery life.

Expanded Localization and UI Improvements

Patch 2.7 also introduces several new community-translated languages. Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear now includes Simplified Chinese, Korean, and Russian. Baldur's Gate 2: Enhanced Edition has gained Brazilian Portuguese, Czech, and Ukrainian translations. Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition receives Hungarian and Japanese language support. The patch also refines language switching, ensuring that the correct languages are displayed for each campaign and enhancing dynamic language support for future updates. A specific font change was made for the Chinese localization at the request of the translation volunteers. Font size settings are now saved independently for each font language.

Mobile and Modding Enhancements

The update includes several improvements for mobile versions of the games. On iOS, the "Restore Purchases" button has been reinstated. Both iOS and Android versions feature mobile keyboard improvements, ensuring the text cursor remains visible during typing. Android users will also find fixed UI scaling and touch input issues on foldable and tall-aspect devices, along with optimizations for the Android override folder to address long boot delays. Furthermore, modding support has been enhanced on mobile platforms, with the game now storing and reading data from locations accessible via file browsers on both iOS and Android. However, it's noted that existing Android installations with incorrect permissions will require a full uninstall and reinstall to enable proper modding access, necessitating the backup of saved games beforehand.
