Baldur's Gate 3 Mod Adds New Region to Act 2

A dedicated modder has spent nearly two years developing an expansion for Baldur's Gate 3 that introduces a new region, the Chionthar Wilds, between the Shadow-Cursed Lands and the city of Baldur's Gate. This mod aims to provide the exploration and scale reminiscent of Act 1, addressing a common critique that Act 2 is more linear.

The Act Two Expansion mod by SquallyDaBeanz inserts the Chionthar Wilds into the game's progression, transforming the direct route to Act 3 into an explorable wilderness. The mod claims to be similar in scope to Baldur's Gate 3's initial act, which can take over 30 hours to complete. It features new quests, dungeons, NPCs, cutscenes, custom creatures with unique stat blocks, over 70 new items, and more than 30 combat encounters designed for player parties between levels eight and ten.

In the Forgotten Realms lore, the Chionthar is a river that serves as a vital trade route. The mod places this waterway and its surrounding forests into the game, providing a narrative justification for players to traverse the area en route to Rivington. The tension over control of the river's mouth is highlighted as a point of historical conflict.

Installing the mod involves placing a .pak file into the game's mod folder and enabling it via the in-game Mod Manager. Once activated, exiting the Shadow-Cursed Lands via the bridge to Baldur's Gate will lead players into the new Chionthar Wilds instead of the standard progression to Act 3. For players starting a new game, the mod offers a Quickstart option that places a party directly into the Wilds with pre-prepared gear and experience, or a spell scroll in the tutorial chest that unlocks a direct waypoint to the region.

Currently in beta, the Act Two Expansion is a self-contained addition that does not alter Act 3 content. While it may contain rough edges typical of a beta release, it aims to capture the spirit of player-driven exploration that Baldur's Gate 3 is known for, offering an experience that feels like stumbling upon a forgotten corner of Faerûn.
