Larian Studios has confirmed its work on Baldur’s Gate 3 has concluded, with no further official expansions or sequels planned. Founder Swen Vincke stated that the studio is moving on to new projects. However, the game's active modding community has continued to produce significant amounts of new content, including several expansion-sized custom campaigns.
Since late July of this year, at least four major custom campaigns have been released for Baldur's Gate 3, with a fifth already in development. This surge in fan-made content comes three years after the game's initial release and despite Larian's explicit statements that no new official expansions will be forthcoming.
The ability for modders to create such extensive content stems from the availability of unlocked toolkits, such as Moonglasses, which bypass restrictions in Larian's official editor. These third-party tools grant access to developer mode, enabling modders to build new levels, write original dialogue, and design new combat encounters – the fundamental elements of a full campaign. One such campaign, "A Dream of Silence: ReVamped," was developed specifically for the BG3 July Modathon 2026, an organized community event, indicating a coordinated effort among some modders.
These fan-made expansions offer a variety of experiences tailored to different player preferences. "A Dream of Silence: ReVamped" presents a six-hour narrative centered around Astarion in a nightmarish version of Cazador’s mansion. For players who prefer action over dialogue, "The Sunless Citadel" provides a linear dungeon crawl focused on combat and exploration. The "Act Two Expansion" introduces a new region, the Chionthar Wilds, to the game's second act, featuring over 70 new items and 30 new fights. "Dinner With Strahd" offers a fully voice-acted, self-contained encounter with the iconic Dungeons & Dragons villain. Looking ahead, "Path to Menzoberranzan" aims to deliver a full three-act campaign with new companions and a new protagonist, set after the events of Baldur’s Gate 2.
These mods are not without limitations. They are currently PC-exclusive and require installation through Nexus Mods, as they do not meet the requirements for Larian’s in-game mod menu. Some campaigns are still in alpha or beta stages, and may lack features like camp systems. Furthermore, running multiple large mods simultaneously can lead to compatibility issues, such as visual glitches when running "A Dream of Silence: ReVamped" alongside "Dinner With Strahd."
Despite these caveats, the robust modding scene ensures that Baldur’s Gate 3 continues to offer fresh experiences for its large player base. With numerous custom campaigns providing hours of new gameplay, the game remains a compelling choice for replays, even without official DLC.
