Battlefield 6 is currently facing significant criticism from its player base due to several new character skins introduced in its latest battle pass, which many perceive as flawed and illogical. The controversy centers on design choices that have led to accusations of generative AI use by the developers.
One prominent example highlighted by players is a soldier skin featuring a mask resembling Batman but without ears. This character is depicted with five pistols attached to the chest pockets of their tactical vest. The absurdity of this design was humorously pointed out by a Reddit user who joked about the perceived benefit of carrying multiple pistols over reloading. Social media posts also showcased this skin with exclamations questioning its approval.
Beyond the excessive weaponry, fans have noted apparent spelling errors on some skins, further fueling suspicions of AI involvement. One skin displays a patch reading "secuty," which is presumed to be a misspelling of "security." One X (formerly Twitter) user stated their belief that it is "almost impossible to deny anymore that EA/DICE is using AI for the skins in #Battlefield6," suggesting that concepts might be generated by AI and then rubber-stamped.
Another skin in question features a bomb disposal character with heavy body armor but a completely exposed head. This character is also shown carrying magazines for what appear to be small game hunting rifles, which are not present in Battlefield 6. Players have commented on the impracticality of such weaponry within the game's context.
While it is possible that these issues stem from human error, the current climate in the video game industry, marked by increased discussion and scrutiny of generative AI, has led players to be skeptical. Major industry players like Epic Games are reportedly embracing AI in development, making any apparent errors in commercially available assets a focal point for player concern.
Further adding to player dissatisfaction are the crossover cosmetics, including a reactive weapon skin and items that allow players to adopt Dead Space-themed appearances, aligning with an upcoming Dead Space event. This inclusion of "whacky" cosmetics is seen by some as contrary to earlier statements made by DICE developers, who had previously committed to a more gritty and realistic aesthetic for Battlefield 6, suggesting that immersion-breaking skins would not be featured.
