Beat Saber, the popular VR rhythm game, is preparing for its "biggest update ever," scheduled for Spring 2027. This significant overhaul will introduce universal hand-tracking capabilities and an entirely new game mode called "Flux." The update aims to expand the game's gameplay mechanics and offer players new ways to interact with the music.
The new Flux mode will see players ditching the game's signature sabers in favor of using their bare hands. This mode requires players to punch, prod, and slap at incoming notes in time with the music. According to the announcement, players will utilize "Flux Powers," such as a Flux Tether that channels energy between their palms to slice notes. Destroying notes builds Jolt energy, which can be unleashed by squeezing fists while slicing to trigger a Jolt for higher scores. While playable with controllers, Flux is designed to showcase the new hand-tracking feature. The mode will launch with support for 35 songs, including a mix of licensed tracks and original compositions.
Beyond the new mode, the update will also bring a refresh to Beat Saber's campaign. This includes new missions, additional checkpoints, and a "light narrative element." The campaign refresh, along with other aspects of the game, will offer new opportunities to earn cosmetic rewards through an upcoming progression system. Players will be able to unlock new looks for their sabers, beats, and bombs.
Beat Saber, originally released in 2019, continues to be one of the most played VR games. The developer Beat Games has stated that this upcoming update is the largest since the game's launch. The timing of the announcement has led some to speculate a connection with the recent interest in VR spurred by new hardware like the Steam Frame, though the update is not directly tied to any specific platform launch.
