Bethesda Softworks has officially confirmed that remasters of both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are in development for modern platforms. These remasters are part of a broader initiative to revitalize the Fallout franchise, which also includes Fallout 5 being in pre-production and a new project at Obsidian Entertainment.
Bethesda stated that multiple Fallout projects are currently in active development. Among these is Fallout 5, which the company describes as the studio's "long-range destination." Additionally, a major expansion for Fallout 76, titled Raven Rock and set to launch in 2027, will serve as a prequel narrative to Fallout 3.
The confirmation of the Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas remasters ends years of speculation. Reports of a Fallout 3 remaster have circulated since at least 2020, stemming from court documents related to the Federal Trade Commission's litigation concerning Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard. No release window has been provided for these remasters.
Bethesda will not host a traditional Fallout Day broadcast in 2026 but is planning a special event for the franchise's 30th anniversary in 2027. Fallout Day, traditionally observed on October 23rd to commemorate the in-game Great War, will be celebrated live in Washington, D.C. that year.
The upcoming remasters follow the recent release of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, a collaborative effort between Virtuos and Bethesda Game Studios. Bethesda also marked the 10-year anniversary of Fallout 4 in 2025 with the release of Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition, which bundled the original game, all its DLC, and over 150 Creation Club items.
Fallout 3 originally launched in 2008 for PlayStation 3, Windows PC, and Xbox 360. Developed by Bethesda after acquiring the rights from Interplay Entertainment, the game is set in a post-apocalyptic Washington, D.C., 200 years after a nuclear war. Players control a Vault dweller searching for their father.
Fallout: New Vegas, developed by Obsidian Entertainment, was released in 2010. Set in the Mojave Desert, the game casts players as a courier caught in a conflict between factions vying for control of the region.
