Bethesda Game Studios has confirmed that Fallout 5 is in early pre-production, marking a significant update on the future of the long-running post-apocalyptic role-playing series. While the game is still a distant prospect, with The Elder Scrolls 6 also in development, the studio emphasized that Fallout remains a high priority.
Fallout 5 will be developed using Creation Engine 3, the same engine employed for Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6. This continuation of Bethesda's proprietary toolset means that the next main installment in the Fallout saga could potentially face criticisms regarding dated visuals, particularly in character animations, when it eventually releases. However, the studio noted that Starfield offered a more stable experience than previous Bethesda titles, suggesting potential improvements for Fallout 5.
In addition to the confirmation of Fallout 5, Bethesda revealed it is working on remasters of both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. The studio also announced a new collaborative effort with Obsidian Entertainment on an unspecififed Fallout game, distinct from Fallout 5. Further expanding the franchise's reach, a TV show based on the mobile game Fallout Shelter is also in development.
Despite these developments, reports from within Bethesda indicate internal challenges. Developers have claimed that the studio is in disarray, with The Elder Scrolls 6 potentially facing delays and the quality assurance department having been significantly reduced.
