Bethesda Game Studios director Todd Howard has officially confirmed that Fallout 5 is now in pre-production, utilizing the Creation Engine 3. This announcement was part of a broader statement detailing the studio's future projects and addressing recent layoffs across Xbox.

Howard revealed that multiple Fallout titles are currently in active development. The highly anticipated Fallout 5 is envisioned as a long-range goal for the studio, with The Elder Scrolls VI being its primary focus in the immediate term. Nevertheless, Fallout 5's pre-production signifies a significant step forward for the next mainline entry in the series.

Fans eager to revisit earlier installments will be pleased to learn that remasters of both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are in development. While specific release dates have not been announced, Howard confirmed these projects are underway, ending speculation that has circulated for months. The original Fallout 3, released in 2008, and Obsidian's 2010 sequel, Fallout: New Vegas, are among the most beloved entries in the franchise.

The ongoing live-service title, Fallout 76, is also set to receive substantial new content. A major expansion, titled Raven Rock, is planned for release next year. This expansion will serve as a prequel to Fallout 3, offering players a new narrative experience within the established world.

In addition to these core game developments, Bethesda is collaborating with Obsidian Entertainment on a new, undisclosed Fallout project. This collaboration comes as Obsidian reportedly saw staffing changes following recent layoffs at Xbox.

Beyond the games, Bethesda is also expanding the Fallout universe through other media. An unscripted television project based on the mobile game Fallout Shelter is in development with Amazon Studios and Kilter Films, the same partners behind the currently airing Fallout series, which is already in production for its third season. Fallout Shelter itself continues to be a popular mobile experience with over 250 million players, and new Seasons are planned for the game.

Howard also noted that Fallout 4, which recently passed 35 million copies sold, continues to attract new players a decade after its release. Bethesda is reportedly planning a special event for Fallout's 30th anniversary in 2027, with a live celebration planned in Washington, D.C.
