Bethesda Game Studios has historically maintained tight control over The Elder Scrolls franchise, preventing the development of spin-off titles in the vein of Obsidian Entertainment's Fallout: New Vegas. According to Kurt Kuhlmann, a former loremaster and lead developer for Skyrim, this protective approach stems from Bethesda's desire to avoid the internal debate that arose after New Vegas's release, questioning whether Bethesda or Obsidian was superior at developing Fallout games.
Kuhlmann stated that director Todd Howard did not wish to replicate that situation with The Elder Scrolls. "Todd, from my time there, he is very protective of it," Kuhlmann explained in an interview with the FRVR podcast. He also noted that The Elder Scrolls Online has since provided a consistent stream of new content and a primary entry point for many players into the franchise, potentially alleviating the perceived need for external single-player spin-offs.
While Kuhlmann departed Bethesda in 2023, the studio's landscape has evolved. Microsoft's acquisition of Bethesda means Obsidian, now under the Xbox umbrella, is working on a new Fallout game. Despite this shift and ongoing restructuring within the company, Bethesda president Jill Braff has assured that Obsidian's unique creative identity will remain intact. The long development cycle of The Elder Scrolls 6 continues, leaving the possibility of future spin-off discussions open, though Bethesda's careful stewardship of its flagship fantasy series appears to be a long-standing strategy.
