With Grand Theft Auto 6 slated for a November 19 release on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, opportunistic scammers are attempting to exploit the game's significant anticipation by offering fake early access opportunities. These fraudulent websites, often designed with the game's distinctive neon aesthetic, promise exclusive early gameplay for prices reaching several hundred dollars, frequently demanding payment in cryptocurrency.
Malwarebytes has identified these scam operations, which use tactics like "VIP Digital Access" or "Exclusive Early Access Preview" to entice potential victims. They may employ AI-generated assets or falsely claim partnerships, such as with popular YouTuber Mr. Beast, to appear legitimate. One particularly audacious scam involved offering a bundle including a Lego Lamborghini set, a Mr. Beast minifigure, and an in-game Lego-inspired vehicle for GTA Online, all for approximately $275 payable in Bitcoin, USDT, or Ethereum. While one such site has since been taken offline, it is likely that some individuals have already fallen prey to these deceptive schemes, receiving nothing in return for their payment.
These scams capitalize on the current trend of early access becoming increasingly common in the video game industry. Many legitimate titles do offer consumers the ability to play their games days before the official launch, which can understandably lead to confusion. Furthermore, these scam sites often employ Fear Of Missing Out (FOMO) tactics, using urgent language to create a sense of scarcity and pressure users into making impulsive decisions, similar to limited-time offers seen on some online retail platforms.
Rockstar Games has not announced any official early access program for Grand Theft Auto 6. The only legitimate "early access" available will be the ability to preload the game, which may contribute to some public misconceptions. Unlike some other games that might offer such opportunities, neither of GTA 6's available editions includes an option for early play. Reports indicate that physical editions will consist of a code within the box rather than a playable disc.
Players eager to secure their copy of Grand Theft Auto 6 can now place official preorders. The game is scheduled to launch on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Authorities advise consumers to exercise extreme caution and disregard any website offering early access, especially if they request payment via cryptocurrency. If a deal seems too good to be true, it almost certainly is.
