Sometimes, the most captivating game experiences are built on little more than "Vibe," according to a recent analysis of the physics-based platformer Big Stretch. This free-to-download title, developed in just 72 hours for the Down2Jam game jam by a team of three, focuses on atmosphere and unique mechanics over extensive assets.
Big Stretch places players in the role of a spherical, red creature with googly eyes and stretchy arms. The core gameplay revolves around using these elastic limbs to grab onto designated points in the environment and launch the character across vast distances. Players must ascend a tower, using momentum to propel themselves upward or forward, akin to a bowling ball.
The tower itself is a minimalist construct, featuring sections of default Unity textures alongside concrete and ethereal grass. The grass acts as a slowing zone, preventing players from rolling off the edge. Should a player fall too far, a glider reminiscent of those from Breath of the Wild deploys, offering a small chance for recovery.
Gameplay in Big Stretch is described as challenging due to limited mid-air control. Once a player commits to a launch, there is no way to cancel the input, drawing parallels to the unforgiving nature of inputs in games like Dark Souls. The game also features no saving system, requiring players to complete the ascent in a single attempt, a design choice that may deter some.
