A documentary detailing the history of BioWare, titled Massive Effect: The BioWare Story, has taken on a new significance following Electronic Arts' closure of the studio. The film, which was two years into production, is now described as a "profound valediction" by its creators.

According to Deadline, the documentary features interviews with BioWare founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk, as well as numerous key developers including Casey Hudson, Mark Darrah, David Gaider, and Drew Karpyshyn. Also contributing are voice actor Jennifer Hale, former EA CEO John Riccitello, and Lucasfilm Games vice president Douglas Reilly.

"When the production team asked for our blessing to tell the BioWare story, we were honored and genuinely moved," stated Muzyka and Zeschuk. "BioWare was never just about the logo or the building. It was about deeply emotionally engaging stories and characters, brought to life by the amazingly talented people on our dev teams, and our excellent production and distribution partners who helped us bring those stories successfully to all corners of the planet, and our passionate fans who defended those worlds, championed them and carried them forward. We're proud this film honors those who made it all possible. The best stories never really end. They live on in our memories and wait for someone to pick them up again."

Documentary writer and director Akash Sherman, whose hometown heroes are the BioWare founders, called it a "privilege and responsibility to share the journey of underdogs who came together to create deeply beloved storytelling." He added, "Their golden era kindled a spark in me and in an entire generation. With the studio's recent closure, the film is now a profound valediction."

Massive Effect: The BioWare Story is slated for release next year. In related news, Mass Effect composer Sam Hulick released a re-scored version of the leaked trailer for Mass Effect Universe as a personal farewell, while Amazon's Mass Effect TV series reportedly remains in development.
