BioWare's Canceled Mass Effect 5 Was Slated to Be the 'Ultimate Open-World Game,' Developers Reveal

Electronic Arts' closure of BioWare has cast a shadow over the gaming world, leaving fans to mourn the studio's unrealized potential. In recent accounts from former BioWare developers, the ambitious scope of the studio's final Mass Effect project, internally referred to as "Mass Effect Universe," has come to light.

An Ambitious Open-World Direction

Speaking with French site BFM, unnamed developers revealed that the goal for Mass Effect Universe was to deliver the "ultimate open-world" experience. This vision appears to have moved away from the direction taken in Mass Effect: Andromeda, which received a lukewarm reception in 2017 partly due to its open-world mechanics. The developers indicated that the team planned to "put aside Andromeda's ideas" and explore player agency beyond dialogue choices, potentially factoring in how players approached situations in gameplay and quests.

Despite some development hurdles, including starting over after switching from the Frostbite Engine to Unreal Engine, the team was reportedly confident in meeting a proposed 2028 release date. The switch to Unreal was motivated by Frostbite's perceived poor fit for open-world and third-person games, a challenge faced during the development of both Andromeda and Anthem.

"The truth is that we had to redo everything," one developer, identified as Sandra, told BFM. The studio's eventual closure by EA means this ambitious vision for the next Mass Effect game will likely never be realized.

Lingering Hope for the Future

With development reportedly progressing well before BioWare's shutdown, the cancellation of this single-player sci-fi epic is particularly poignant. While the future of the Mass Effect franchise remains uncertain, a dedicated fanbase continues to advocate for its return. The success of the upcoming Mass Effect TV series could also influence EA's decision-making regarding the intellectual property, potentially paving the way for future installments should the franchise prove profitable once more.
