Beloved RPG developer BioWare may have ceased to exist as an independent entity following its acquisition by Electronic Arts, but its influence and the talent it fostered are far from gone. Numerous studios and projects are now carrying forward the narrative-driven, character-focused style that BioWare pioneered.
Arcanaut Studios, led by former BioWare General Manager Casey Hudson, is developing Star Wars: Fate of the Republic. This project is positioned as a spiritual successor to BioWare's Knights of the Old Republic, and its development team includes many veterans who worked on BioWare's Star Wars titles and other iconic games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age. While a release date is not yet set, Hudson has indicated it will launch before 2030. Meanwhile, the BioWare-developed MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic continues under Broadsword Online Games, with a new expansion, Masters of the Force, on the horizon.
Archetype Entertainment, a subsidiary of Wizards of the Coast, is another significant hub for former BioWare talent. Led by James Ohlen, designer of Baldur's Gate, KOTOR, and Dragon Age: Origins, the studio is working on Exodus. This ambitious sci-fi project draws clear inspiration from Mass Effect and is slated for release on April 7, 2027. Following his work on Exodus, Ohlen has returned to his roots in tabletop roleplaying games with Arcanum Worlds, which also employs several ex-BioWare writers.
Beamdog, founded by BioWare co-founder Trent Oster, has a history of supporting BioWare's legacy through remasters of titles like Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights. More recently, the studio released the mixed-reviewed roguelite Mythforce in 2023.
On the indie scene, David Gaider, lead writer for Dragon Age, co-founded Summerfall Studios. The studio released Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical in 2023, featuring a BioWare-esque dialogue system, followed by DLC and the roguelite deckbuilder Malys in 2025.
Mike Laidlaw, creative director for the Dragon Age series, established Yellow Brick Games. Their debut title, Eternal Strands, released in 2024, showcases an intricate physics-based combat system inspired by titles like Shadow of the Colossus and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Inflexion Games, founded by former BioWare GM Aaryn Flynn, released its debut game Nightingale into early access in 2024. This survival game set in a Victorian-inspired fantasy world has been generally well-received but has faced challenges with player retention. Inflexion has also been involved as a development partner on Conan Exiles Enhanced, impacting the development timeline for Nightingale.
Other studios are in earlier stages of development. North Mist Studios, a collaboration of former BioWare writers and a cinematic director, is developing The Concierge, a spy-thriller, through narrative podcasts. They are also prototyping a smaller horror game, Alone With The Deep, to aid in team and funding growth.
Studio Reset, founded by veterans of the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series, is working on The Eventide, described as a "neon-noir supernatural mystery." The studio aims for intentional, player-focused development with a small team.
Mac Walters, a writer on Mass Effect, founded Worlds Untold, but faced funding withdrawal from NetEase in 2024. The studio has been quiet since, though it has not announced a definitive end.
The enduring impact of BioWare is evident not only in these direct continuations but also in the broader RPG landscape. Larian Studios' critically acclaimed Baldur's Gate 3 is often cited as a modern example of BioWare's influence, particularly in its blend of epic scope and personal character narratives. As Larian boss Swen Vincke noted, BioWare was instrumental in popularizing large-scale RPGs, and its absence will be felt.
