Game Science has unveiled a new gameplay trailer for its upcoming action RPG, Black Myth: Zhong Kui, offering a first look at the game's protagonist and combat system. The trailer introduces a youthful, seemingly carefree individual embarking on various activities, from fishing for demons to battling them with a one-handed blade. However, the trailer also raises significant questions about his identity and connection to the fearsome deity Zhong Kui, after whom the game is named.

This marks the second title in Game Science's Black Myth series, following the well-received Black Myth: Wukong. Black Myth: Zhong Kui was initially teased in a trailer at Gamescom 2025, hinting at a continuation of the Chinese folklore theme. The recent gameplay trailer, however, delves deeper into the game's world, showcasing new enemy types and the environment, but most notably, presenting a protagonist who bears little resemblance to the traditional depiction of Zhong Kui. The deity is typically portrayed as a large, bearded, and intimidating figure, a stark contrast to the young man featured in the trailer.

The trailer's initial segment depicts the protagonist stranded in a mountainous region. He encounters an elderly man, and together they explore, evade environmental hazards, and craft a raft before engaging with demons. A notable detail is the gourd attached to the protagonist's belt, suggesting a return of the potion system seen in Black Myth: Wukong for boosting attacks and restoring health.

The narrative takes a turn when the elderly man seemingly perishes, transforming into a swarm of particles. The protagonist then utilizes fire from burning trees to augment his sword. Later, after an encounter with a monstrous lake creature, he summons a dark-cloaked companion, a figure whose attire is reminiscent of Zhong Kui's appearance in the game's reveal trailer. The trailer then shows the protagonist merging with this cloaked companion to continue the fight as a single entity. This fusion sparks speculation about the companion's identity—whether it is Zhong Kui himself, an alter ego, or a bestowed power. The possibility of this figure being a younger version of Zhong Kui is explored, given that the deity was once mortal.

The trailer concludes with rapid glimpses of the protagonist and the cloaked companion together. In the final scene, Zhong Kui is shown riding a tiger on a cliff, displaying a green sword sheath that appears similar, but not identical, to the one carried by the protagonist. The cloaked companion is also shown wielding an arched sabre, which further differentiates it from the protagonist's weapon. Further clarification on the protagonist's true nature and his relationship with Zhong Kui is anticipated in future trailers.
