Juanjo Guarnido, the acclaimed artist behind the Blacksad series, is set to release a new graphic novel titled "A Scoundrel in the New World." This satirical adventure chronicles the legend of El Dorado and is penned by Alain Ayroles, known for his work on "Garulfo." The project is a sequel to Francisco de Quevedo's 1626 novel, "The Life of the Swindler named Don Pablos."
The graphic novel follows Don Pablos of Segovia, a charming conman who travels from Spain to the New World in search of fortune. Found in prison, Pablos recounts his misadventures to inquisitors, presenting himself as an unreliable narrator. The story delves into his schemes to ascend the social ladder amidst the opulence of colonial elites and the untamed jungles, where human ambition proves to be the greatest predator.
"A Scoundrel in the New World may be Juanjo Guarnido’s most ambitious work to date," stated Magnetic Press’ Director of Publishing, Mike Kennedy. He further described the illustrations as paintings filled with historical detail and expressive characters, enhanced by cinematic lighting. Kennedy also praised Ayroles' script as a witty homage to Spanish literature, employing a shifting perspective that challenges the reader's perception of the protagonist's credibility.
A Kickstarter campaign for "A Scoundrel in the New World" is currently live, with Oni Press and Magnetic Press partnering for its publication. IGN has provided an exclusive preview of the book, showcasing Guarnido's distinctive artistic style applied to this historical setting.
