Overwatch 2 players have voiced frustration over a perceived favoritism in the distribution of the game's premium Mythic skins. Many feel that popular heroes, such as Kiriko and Genji, continue to receive new skins, including those with customizable parts and unique ability visual effects, while other heroes are left with fewer cosmetic options. These Mythic skins are the most expensive in the game, costing approximately $70 or 80 Mythic Prisms, acquired through the battle pass or direct purchase.
The issue has intensified as some heroes, like Widowmaker, have received a second Mythic skin, while many others have yet to receive even their first. This trend has led to significant player backlash, particularly when a new Mythic skin for one hero debuts in the same season another hero receives their second.
In an interview with PC Gamer, art director Dion Rogers stated that the team is aware of the feedback regarding the repeat distribution of Mythic skins. He explained that the selection of heroes for these skins often comes down to what the team is "excited about in the moment" or the "cool ideas sitting in front of us," noting that some heroes are also easier to design for than others. However, Rogers confirmed that addressing this imbalance is a priority.
"It's just more of what the team is excited about in the moment, or the very cool ideas sitting in front of us basically," Rogers said. He added that the team has been actively conceptualizing ways to spread Mythic skins out more evenly among the hero roster.
"We've done recently a big blue-sky sketch, like *hit as many as these guys as possible and see if something jumps out," he explained. While players may not see a wider variety of Mythic skins immediately due to the development time involved, Blizzard's acknowledgment and stated intention to improve distribution offer hope for a more equitable cosmetic future for all Overwatch 2 heroes.
