Blizzard Entertainment has confirmed that Diablo 4 will not receive any further major expansions. This decision comes as the studio redirects its focus towards ongoing seasonal content for Diablo 4 and the development of the upcoming Diablo 5, which was unexpectedly revealed at BlizzCon and is slated for release in 2029.
Diablo game director Brent Gibson stated that the team's primary focus is now on Diablo 5. "We feel like we told the Story of Hatred. We had a great conclusion with Lord of Hatred with what we have with Mephisto, and we are moving towards telling the Story of Terror," Gibson told PC Gamer. While the end of the 'Lord of Hatred' narrative arc provided a sense of finality, Blizzard intends to continue developing the story through seasonal updates rather than large-scale expansions.
The narrative of Diablo 5 is set a century after Diablo 4, in a significantly altered Sanctuary. Blizzard is considering how to bridge this temporal gap and connect the stories, but the exact shape of this narrative integration remains undetermined. "Continuity is something that we're really excited about, but we don't necessarily have a perfect picture on exactly where that's going to go because we want to see how fans are reacting season to season," Gibson explained.
In the immediate future, Diablo 4's next season, 'Season of Hell's Legacy,' is set to launch on September 15. This season commemorates the franchise's 30th anniversary and will feature the return of Deckard Cain. Players will embark on a quest to confront the original three Prime Evils: Diablo, Baal, and Mephisto. The same day will also see the release of a port for the Nintendo Switch 2, which will include all previously released content for Diablo 4.
Blizzard has also announced that the Amazon, a returning class from past Diablo titles, will be added to Diablo 4 in the first half of 2027. This addition will occur three years before the anticipated release of Diablo 5.
