Blizzard has issued a stern warning to players in the World of Warcraft: Forever beta, emphasizing that its development team is actively reviewing and banning characters with offensive names. The company stated that actual humans are examining these names and warned against attempting to "test" the system, as it could lead to the loss of beta access.
Forever, a new iteration of World of Warcraft intended to offer a "Classic+" experience, saw a significant influx of players upon its beta's release last week. The introduction of dual character names, allowing for both a first and last name, opened up new avenues for player creativity but also led to names that crossed Blizzard's moderation lines.
In a forum post, Blizzard detailed its actions, stating that characters in violation of naming policies were subject to forced name changes. Furthermore, some users who created names deemed "far outside of our Code of Conduct" had their beta access revoked. The company reiterated its commitment to the safety and inclusivity of the game, assuring players that these decisions were made by the World of Warcraft Development team following individual reviews. Appeals to Customer Service regarding these actions will not be facilitated.
The company's firm stance was prompted by some players who took to social media to express confusion and frustration, questioning whether the bans were automated. One player cited their name, "Devil Tootsalot," asking how it could be considered highly offensive and suggesting a human could not have possibly reviewed it.
Senior game producer Tom Ellis defended Blizzard's approach, explaining on social media that players banned from the beta were likely removed due to a character name they created, even if it wasn't the one they were actively playing. He clarified that "Multiple unfortunate humans read through every name that was removed from beta today" and that the company can access the database to see all created characters. Ellis concluded by advising players to "Be a better human next time."
Creating unique and humorous character names has been a long-standing tradition in World of Warcraft since its launch over two decades ago. Blizzard has historically had to manage genuinely offensive names, but the advent of Forever presents a renewed challenge in policing character names amidst a potentially massive player base, mirroring the game's early days.
