Blizzard Entertainment's unionized workforce has secured a significant contractual provision that requires the company to discuss, evaluate, and bargain with employees before introducing generative artificial intelligence into the workplace. This landmark agreement, developed over two years in conjunction with the Communications Workers of America (CWA), impacts approximately 1900 workers across titles like World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, Overwatch, and Diablo, as well as QA departments.

The new contract also introduces other benefits for these employees, including wage increases, improved grievance procedures, a three-day in-office hybrid workweek, 'just cause' protections, provisions for remote work, and disability accommodations. These additions come at a time of industry-wide uncertainty, highlighted by recent layoffs impacting over 1600 jobs at Xbox-owned studios, with an additional 1600 jobs at risk.

Under the new terms, Microsoft cannot unilaterally enforce AI usage within Blizzard's development divisions as it has done in other software development sectors. The agreement also provides enhanced protections for workers facing potential layoffs, including a recall right into open positions across any Blizzard bargaining unit for 14 months post-layoff announcement, and an additional four weeks of severance pay for union workers, regardless of their tenure.

QA worker and bargaining committee member Simon Hedrick expressed optimism about the contract's broader implications, stating, "I believe that the positive change we have won will ripple out and help make the games industry as a whole a better place for workers and players alike." He added, "This contract is the start of something greater, and I urge everyone to remember: when we fight together, we win together."
