Blizzard Vet Rob Pardo's Decade-Long Odyssey with PvP Dungeon Crawler Arkheron

Arkheron, the ambitious PvP dungeon crawler from Bonfire Studios CEO Rob Pardo, a veteran of Blizzard Entertainment, is nearing a significant milestone with its crossplay beta set to begin on September 25. The game blends fast-paced PvP action with dungeon crawling elements, a combination Pardo describes as an "odyssey" that has taken nearly a decade to bring to fruition.

During a recent preview event, Pardo shared insights into the development journey of Arkheron, a title that merges the loot-driven combat of action RPGs with competitive knockout mechanics, drawing comparisons to Diablo and Hades. "I would say the years were absolutely worth it," Pardo stated. "What's always tough is that 20/20 hindsight; you always wish you didn't go down so many dead ends where you could have made smarter choices at the time, but I think for me, because I've been through so many product cycles now at Blizzard, I think it comes with the territory of trying to innovate in a new direction creatively."

Arkheron features an isometric perspective reminiscent of traditional action RPGs, but its combat emphasizes precision and real-time action inspired by Hades. The core gameplay loop involves teams racing to acquire loot and ascend an evolving tower, battling rival squads along the way. This competitive edge aims to make dungeon dives chaotic and exhilarating, a departure from the typically slower pace of the genre.

The game's setting is a dark-fantasy interpretation of the "Backrooms," a mysterious purgatory where players embody resurrected spirits known as "echoes." These echoes navigate a vast, dynamic tower constructed from the memories of fallen warriors. As they climb, players collect loot, fight other teams, and delve into the tower's lore by embodying lost vanguards.

Bonfire Studios has been conducting early playtests over the past year, gathering feedback that has led to the introduction of "Spires," a smaller 3v3 mode that will complement the game's standard 45-player format. Pardo highlighted the importance of these iterative steps. "You can't get rid of the trials and tribulations and going through the wrong paths in game development," he said. "But when we did the alpha test last year, it was the first time we put the game out for people, and it was really validating for a lot of the developers who had spent five to six years working quietly on Arkheron." The upcoming crossplay beta will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X, marking a significant step toward multi-platform release. Pardo aims to leverage his experience from Blizzard titles like Diablo and World of Warcraft, while also adapting to the current market. "I think what was important for me in my Bonfire journey is just being clear. I'm not in the creative driving seat, but my role needs to be about taking care of the whole team and the studio," Pardo explained. "But I do have a creative background, and I totally want to carry forward the knowledge and wisdom of development processes that I had from Blizzard." Arkheron

While Arkheron's official launch date remains unconfirmed, the extended development period reflects Bonfire Studios' commitment to refining its unique vision. "It's very much been an odyssey; there's just been ups and downs [with developing Arkheron and a new studio]," Pardo reflected. "I think it's been, overall, a journey of joy, terror, and a story of resilience." Arkheron Arkheron
