Messhof, the developer behind Nidhogg and Wheel World, is set to release Blood Dungeon on August 25, a new title that adapts the "bullet heaven" genre popularized by Vampire Survivors. The game will be available on Windows PC and is entering a crowded market of similar titles, but early impressions suggest it has the potential to stand out.
At its core, Blood Dungeon mirrors the gameplay loop of Vampire Survivors. Players navigate a map while enemies attack automatically, with leveling up offering a choice of three upgrades. Treasure chests can also provide additional perks. However, Blood Dungeon introduces a 2D platforming element, requiring players to maneuver around environmental obstacles while dodging enemies. This adds a layer of complexity, as players must manage movement and combat simultaneously.
First showcased at Summer Game Fest, Blood Dungeon reportedly captivated attendees with its simple controls, "delightfully crude visuals," and engaging leaderboards. The experience was described by one player as reminiscent of the initial discovery of Vampire Survivors, offering a similar "time travel" effect where hours feel like minutes. This positive reception was echoed by other attendees, many of whom listed Blood Dungeon among their top games of the show. Following Summer Game Fest, its public demo on Steam has also garnered significant attention and positive word-of-mouth.
Those interested in trying Blood Dungeon can download the free demo on Steam prior to its official launch on August 25.
