An animated adaptation of FromSoftware's acclaimed action RPG Bloodborne is progressing, with producer Seán “Jacksepticeye” McLoughlin confirming that a director and writer are attached to the project. McLoughlin, working with PlayStation Productions and Lyrical Animation on the R-rated film, shared an update in an interview with IGN.
“Things are obviously much more along the pipeline than they were back then,” McLoughlin stated. “I personally would love to just say everything as a fan of this thing, but then there’s no expectation, or there’s no fun in the process. So we definitely have a lot more stuff mapped out where we’re going with the story, and there are people in place to make this thing happen.”
While specific names were not revealed, McLoughlin indicated that announcements regarding the cast and further story details would be made in the near future. He emphasized a commitment to staying true to the source material's tone and world, while also acknowledging the potential for creative interpretation.
“I am proud of the work I’ve been doing on it,” he said. “I think it’s such an interesting job to have, and for me, it’s fun to do. It can be really stressful as well at the same time, because you’re taking on such a monumental IP. And I am just there to be like, ‘Hey, we need this pinprick perfect.’ Will we ever get something perfect? I don’t know. It’s probably impossible to get everyone’s expectations into one central pillar, but as someone who’s brought on to do this job, I’m right in the position where I need to be, and we’re poised to have something really cool.”
McLoughlin suggested that the adaptation might not follow the game's narrative beat-for-beat, drawing parallels to successful recent video game adaptations like the Fallout TV series and the Resident Evil film. These adaptations have often found success by exploring new stories within established universes rather than strictly retreading existing plots. Given the cryptic nature of Bloodborne's lore, which is often conveyed through environmental storytelling and item descriptions, there is ample room for new narrative avenues.
The Bloodborne adaptation joins other upcoming projects based on FromSoftware titles. A Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice anime series, titled Sekiro: No Defeat, is set to premiere globally on Crunchyroll in January 2027. Additionally, A24 is producing an Elden Ring film directed by Alex Garland, reportedly the studio's most expensive project to date with a $200 million budget, slated for a March 2028 theatrical release.
